| AzMTA President: Dalena Watson, LPC, FAMI, MT-BC
I received my music therapy degree from ASU and worked in the field of developmental disabilities as well as adult mental health. While employed at the Arizona State Hospital, I began studies in the Bonny method of GIM as well as a master degree in counseling. I am in private practice and over time have specialized in the treatment of sexual offenders, trauma and abuse, grief and loss, transsexuality, as well as personal growth, wellness, creativity and meditation. I also teach classes for the hypnotherapy program at Southwest Institute for Healing Arts and classes for the forensic psychology program at Argosy University. I have supervised music therapy students in practicum at ASU, at ASH, and as clinical director of ASH’s music therapy internship program. I am interested in continuing the public’s education and awareness of music therapy and the tremendous benefits available through this modality.

AzMTA Vice-President: Holly Perry, MT-BC
I pursued my passion for music therapy by earning my Bachelors in Music Therapy at Arizona State University. My internship was on Whidbey Island of Washington State under the supervision of Barbara Dunn. I experienced the power of music with people in a variety of life phases at Whidbey General Hospital. I started my professional journey in Arizona by providing home-based music therapy services for children with developmental disabilities in the East Valley. I soon joined the family at Lauren’s Institute for Education to provide clinic-based services among a supportive and collaborative team. As a classically trained musician, I played in orchestras and string quartets, but also enjoy a fun jam session in a folk band, improvising in a drumming circle, or figuring out a favorite tune on the piano.

AzMTA Secretary/Treasurer: Karen Van Helden, MT-BC, NMT
Since becoming board certified five years ago, Karen has provided music therapy services to children with developmental disabilities both at home and in clinic. Originally from Long Island, New York, she earned her bachelors degree from Radford University in Virginia. Upon completion of her coursework, she was an intern at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan. After relocating back to Virginia, she worked at a residential Alzheimer/Dementia facility. While leading one on one music therapy sessions with Autistic children, she realized her desire to specialize in this area. She then settled in Phoenix to continue her work with children. She has a deep appreciation for the power of music, and finds immense satisfaction as a music therapist. In her spare time, Karen enjoys singing with a local band that performs in the valley.
